HOSPICE bosses are hoping a new fundraising initiative will come into full bloom.

St Cuthbert's Hospice has launched a Sunflower Appeal, offering people the chance to buy an artificial sunflower in memory of a loved one who has died.

The sunflowers, each bearing a name, will be displayed in the garden at the Durham City hospice between June 8 and July 12, after which their owners can take them home.

Kay Welsh, from the hospice, said: "This is a new appeal for us and we feel it is a positive way for people to support the hospice as well as to remember those who have passed away.

"Many of our supporters give to our Light up a Life appeal each Christmas, but we know those loved ones are in people's hearts all year round.

"We hope the people of County Durham will appreciate the chance to make this commemoration and at the same time give a donation to support our work."
