ONE of the region’s leading comprehensive schools has been given a glowing Ofsted report.

Durham Johnston School, in Durham City, was described as outstanding in every category by the schools watchdog.

Inspectors found that school leaders and managers promote a culture of high expectations and ambition, leading to students achieving exceptionally well.

Students are keen to learn, courteous, polite and respectful, they said, and enjoy a vast range of stimulating activities.

The sixth form was also described as outstanding and teachers were praised for their agile approach, which meant students are inspired, motivated and excited.

Head teacher Michael Wardle said he was delighted at the outcome of the inspection.

“We are pleased that inspectors noted some of the features which make our school so special.

“They spoke of the harmonious ethos, our focus on academic stretch and knowing exactly where our students are in their learning, and our inclusive approach.

“The report captures the school well and is testimony to the hard work of students and teachers alike.”

Professor Simon Morris, the chair of governors, said: “Governors are delighted with the recognition of the hard work and excellence of the staff and students at Durham Johnston.

“The core values of social justice and equal opportunities for all held by the school clearly are yielding outstanding results.”
