TWO sixth formers shared their experience of visiting Auschwitz with their classmates to mark Holocaust Memorial Day.

Abigail Gowland and Charlotte Foakes, from Durham Sixth Form Centre, travelled to the infamous Nazi camp last October, under the Lessons from Auschwitz programme.

On their return, they helped to organise the college’s annual commemoration on Tuesday (January 27), talking about their visit with fellow pupils, Deputy Mayor of Durham Patrick Conway and others.

A school spokesman said: “All involved were touched by the maturity and empathy shown by both students when expressing how the experience had affected them and how they felt a responsibility to share what they had learned.”

Charlotte said: “Visiting Auschwitz was an incredibly humbling experience.

“I believe that my visit to Auschwitz was extremely worthwhile and an unforgettable experience that will stick with me forever.”

Abigail said: “The trip was an amazing experience and one that not only taught us lots about the Holocaust but one during which we also learned lots about ourselves.

“It’s so important to remember the Holocaust so that nothing like this happens again in the future.”
