CHRISTMAS shoppers in Durham are able to view exciting plans for the multi million pound regeneration of the city centre.

The Gates Shopping Centre in Durham has put the proposals on public display as part of a special seasonal exhibition.

The plans for the construction of a multi-screen cinema, restaurants, cafes student flats and a new parade of shops in the area, are on show today (Friday November 28) 7pm and from 9.30am to 1pm tomorrow alongside a lit-up Christmas tree.

Through the event, London-based property firm Clearbell, which owns The Gates, hopes to gather support and enthusiasm for the upcoming £30m project, which will create an estimated 120 extra jobs once all developments are complete.

Company partner Nick Berry said: “We are very excited about the proposed improvements to The Gates. Durham has long been staved of a cinema and we think residents from the city and surrounding area deserve a better place to eat, shop and be entertained.

“We are developing the centre to include a new pedestrian area, a cinema and some shops. The aim today is we are first opportunity to show the public what we are doing and hear their views.”

Steven Whiteman, owner of Bonappefeet Beauty Salon, which is part of the centre, is supporting the plans.

He said: “We are feeling really positive about it and it is something that Durham definitely needs. It is good for the people of Durham because there is not much for young people. With these developments we will attract more young people.”
