AN exhibition of inflatable artworks has helped a museum break its own visitor records.

The Generation Air show has catapulted the DLI Museum and Durham Art Gallery to its best ever visitor numbers for families and top overall figures for October in 14 years.

Air features other-worldly inflatable installations inspired by the human body and is currently touring the North.

More than 1,500 people saw it at Aykley Heads, Durham City, during October half-term alone. Across the month, 690 family passes were used and there were 678 school visitors.

The exhibition runs until January 11. On Saturday, November 29, visitors can take part in a human cell modelling workshop.

Museum curator Lucy Jenkins said: “It’s wonderful news that our efforts have paid off and so many families came to enjoy Generation Air this October.

“The Generation tour deliberately set out to grow this audience, realising that many families were missing out on accessing contemporary art.”

The museum is open 10.30am to 4pm Wednesday to Sunday during school term, with extra hours during school holidays. Entry costs £4 for adults, £3 for concessions, £2 for children aged four to 16 and £10.50 for a family pass for two adults and up to three children. Annual passes are also available.
