A VILLAGE school has welcomed a visit by two Indian teachers.

Bowburn Infants and Nursery School, in Bowburn, near Durham City, hosted Shirin Amerjee and Rinku Paul, both teachers at the Gokhale Memorial Girls School in Kolkata.

The visitors spent a week observing classes and helping with lessons and also taught pupils some Indian dancing techniques.

A special lunch was held to welcome the teachers, which was attended by Durham County Council vice-chairman Jan Blakey, the council’s international officer Brian Stobie, school governors and others.

The visitors, who were both making their first trip to the UK, were presented with a commemorative plaque and piece of Durham coal to take home to their school in India as mementoes of their visit.

They stayed with the school’s international co-ordinator Trish Fay and were also taken on a sightseeing trip to Durham Cathedral and the North Sea coast at South Shields.

The small school has well-established international links. Last month, two teachers from Nepal spent a week visiting.
