A UNIVERSITY will showcase a replica of a telescope designed to shed new light on the universe at its annual Celebrate Science festival next week.

The James Webb Space telescope, which will replace the world-renowned Hubble Telescope when launched into space in 2018, was partly designed by Durham University’s Centre for Advanced Instrumentation and will form part of the “Seeing the Universe in All its Light” exhibition.

Dr Pete Edwards, Director of Science Outreach at Durham University, said: “Durham is genuinely a leading international centre for research into the evolution of our universe and we are helping to devise new technology that will enable us to understand more and more about our cosmic origins.”

“Celebrate Science is a great way to showcase the breadth of scientific expertise available at Durham across a range of subjects and to encourage the next generation of scientists.”

The exhibition will be held in Wolfson Gallery at Palace Green Library during the free festival, which runs from Tuesday, October 28 to Thursday, October 30.
