A WOMAN with terminal cancer is to marry her fiancé of 30 years in the hospice where she is being cared for.

June Webster, 60, is due to tie the knot with Jim Carter, 75, in a specially-arranged ceremony at St Cuthbert’s Hospice, Durham City, where she is an in-patient, on Friday (October 3).

The couple, from Sacriston, County Durham, have been together for 32 years and engaged for 30, decided to get married due to her worsening condition.

Doctors have told Ms Webster, who works for Elior Catering and Lidl at the city’s Arnison Centre retail park, that she may only have days to live.

Ms Webster said: “I’m over the moon I’m marrying Jim. He’s proposed a few times but I’ve always said no.

“I love him and he loves me so it is right. I was nervous before because I’d been married before and I didn’t want what Jim and I have to change in any way. We’re very happy. I’m not nervous now.

“I am so happy. I want us to share a name at last. I want his name on my coffin.”

Hospice staff worked with Durham Register Office to arrange the wedding, which will be blessed by a vicar.

The hospice will create a makeshift aisle for the occasion and decorate the room with Ms Webster’s favourite pink carnations.

Staff have also arranged a special wedding meal.

A “pre-wedding celebration” is due to be held tonight (Wednesday, October 1).“We’re going to have a drink. Just me and the girls,”

said the bride-to-be.

Ms Webster said she was “overwhelmed’’ by the help the hospice and its staff had given her.

Her fiance said: “I’m so proud to be marrying. I can’t believe how strong June is. We have been very lucky to have had so many years together.

“Being married now means the world to both of us. June is an inspiration to all our family and everyone who knows her.”

The couple’s daughter, Claire, said: “I think it’s about time they got married. They have lived together so long and they are so close.

"They’ve put it off and put it off. It’s one last thing they can do for each other.”
