AN AWARD-winning documentary on Labour legend Tony Benn will be screened at Durham Cathedral.Tony Benn: Will and Testament is said to be a personal look at the man behind the politician.
A Praslin Pictures production directed by Skip Kite, it won the Edinburgh International Film Festival 2014 Audience Award and features interviews and archive footage.
Mr Benn was a Labour MP for 47 years and served as a cabinet minister in the 1970s. He became an icon of the political left and ardent anti-war campaigner. He died in March, aged 88.
Mr Benn was a regular visitor to the Durham Miners’ Gala and the proceeds from the screening in the cathedral’s nave on Thursday, October 9, at 7pm will go to the Durham Miners’ Association, which is raising money to secure the future of the Gala.
The Very Reverend Michael Sadgrove, the Dean of Durham, said: “The cathedral is delighted to be hosting the screening.
“I fondly recall Tony Benn giving a sermon in the cathedral in July 2003. He spoke about how much the labour movement owed to the prophets of the Old Testament.
“It was met with a rousing round of applause, a rare plaudit indeed as far as cathedral sermons go.”
