ONE of the country’s oldest schools has had stained glass window designed for its chapel to mark its 600th anniversary.

Durham School, in Durham City, held a competition among its pupils to create a design for the window that reflects the past and looks to the future.

The winning design was selected by a panel that included a representative of the Old Dunelmian Society and Janet Rogers, the owner of the city’s Crushed Chilli Gallery.

The winning design was produced by Year 12 pupil Alex Douglas.

On Friday (September 26) the Dean of Durham, The Very Rev Michael Sadgrove officially unveiled the window at a special dedication service.

A school spokesman said: “ The beautiful design was cleverly brought to life by Janet Rogers at the Crushed Chilli Gallery and installed during the summer, ready for the special occasion.

“Incorporated within the glass design is a field of poppies remembering all those former pupils (Old Dunelmians) who served and lost their lives for their country in the first and second World Wars.

“It is fitting that in this 600th year of Durham School and the commemoration of those who fell in the First World War, that the window should be completed and dedicated in this way. “
