ONE of the North-East’s most important places of worship is inviting people to pray for voters in the Scottish Independence Referendum.

Durham Cathedral, one of the Anglican Church’s most iconic buildings, has set up a prayer station where prayers can be said ahead of the vote.

Two specially-written prayers have been placed at the cathedral’s Altar of St Margaret of Scotland.

The Dean of Durham, The Very Reverend Michael Sadgrove, said: “We are inviting people to pray for the people of Scotland and the whole United Kingdom at this crucial time of decision.

“We pray that all the people of Scotland will use their vote responsibly and carefully with a view to the things that will enable our mutual flourishing so that these islands remain a secure home for all our people.

“What we could easily overlook is that whichever way the vote goes, almost 50 per cent of voters will be disappointed. We need to pray for unity and reconciliation within Scotland following the vote, and for the future of all the peoples of these islands, whichever way it goes.”

Durham Cathedral is open to the public until 6pm each day for visitors and more information can be found at durhamcathedral.co.uk
