ANTICIPATION is mounting to see who may place the 100,000th Lego brick in a model of Durham Cathedral.

Since it started more than a year ago, 99,500 bricks have been placed on the model by members of the public and corporate sponsors - all bought for £1 each by donors to the cathedral’s £10m Open Treasure appeal.

The landmark comes as Durham Cathedral urges people to look forward to celebrating the 995,000th brick being placed on the Lego Cathedral model by joining their 995 Club.

Corporate and trust officer, Kate Hunter said: “Like the Lego Cathedral, the 995 Club is a fundraising element of our Open Treasure appeal.

“Members commit to donating £99.50 every year for four years and that money goes towards helping us raise the £10m needed for the Open Treasure work.”

Open Treasure is set to transform the way visitors can enjoy the Cathedral and gain inspiration from it, including the creation of a specialist exhibition space, where the treasures of St Cuthbert will be on display alongside various visiting exhibitions.

Ms Hunter said: “The cathedral’s Open Treasure project is very exciting and we are so grateful to everyone who has supported us so far, in whichever way they have chosen to donate.”

Volunteers working on the Lego Cathedral are now getting excited to sell the 100,000th brick for the model.

Project co-ordinator Catherine Hodgson said: “It will be a real achievement to see the 100,000 sign go up.

“We plan to have a celebration with the person who purchases that milestone brick to place on the model and really hope to make something of it.”
