VISITORS can experience a First World War recruitment drive this weekend (Saturday, September 13).
The Time Bandits will be recreating a 1914 war effort recruitment event, plus setting up a machine gun post and practising drills, in Durham Market Place on Saturday (September 13).
The event is part of a weekend of activities commemorating the First World War and climaxing with the unveiling of a new Durham Light Infantry memorial statue.
There will also be a First World War-themed window dressing competition for city centre businesses.
Colin Wilkes, managing director of Durham Markets, said: “There is clear fascination from all ages as to what life was like as Britain went to war 100 years ago.
“The Time Bandits are always popular with all ages but especially the children who will no doubt be participating in the drills.”
