THE region’s biggest display of military vehicles has attracted up to 2,000 visitors over the past two days.

The North-East Military Vehicle Rally was held on Sunday and Monday in the grounds of the DLI Museum and Durham Art Gallery in Durham City.

Now in its 41st year, the event, organised by the North-East Military Vehicle Club, featured about 70 restored vehicles and pieces of artillery dating from the 1930s to the present day.

There were also stalls, living history displays and activities for younger visitors, including the chance to help make a large military vehicle out of cardboard and a miniature parachute or military vehicle to take home.

Tom Betts, commercial services officer at the DLI, said: “Year on year they have brought more and more varied vehicles.

“We have had a big up take in request for information about the First World War with the commemorations being in the press so much recently.

“It has had a positive impact on the museum with people curious about their family history. It has wakened people up to looking into how their families were individually involved in the war and their personal stories.

“It has also had a positive impact on people coming to this event over the weekend.”
