THE selfie phenomenon has reached Durham Cathedral.

The 900-year-old wonder is encouraging photographers at its annual open evening to take a selfie, a picture of themselves, and share it on Twitter using the hashtag #dcathselfie.

Photographers will also be invited to post pictures to the cathedral’s Facebook page for an online competition.

Photography inside the cathedral is usually restricted to those with special permission.

But between 6.30pm and 9pm on Monday, September 8, all are welcome.

The cost is £10 per camera. To book, visit durhamcathedral.co.uk/whatson and download a booking form.

Entry to the tower costs an extra £5 for adults and £2.50 for children.

Ruth Robson, the cathedral’s head of marketing and events, said: “These evenings are always very popular, providing a chance to capture images in this wonderful building, something that is normally strictly forbidden.

“In recent months, we have noticed a trend of people sharing their favourite images of the cathedral on social media sites, so we decided it would be wonderful to embrace that and bring a social and digital element to the evening this time around.”
