A THREE-day folk festival will take place later this month (August 14-16).

The Durham Gathering, presented by Folkworks, will include traditional music, song and dance and be the culmination of the annual Folkworks Summer Schools, which run the same week.

This year’s is the 25th Gathering and a special concert celebrating the landmark will be held on Friday, August 15, at 5pm.

Folkworks co-founder Alistair Anderson will present a whirlwind 60 minutes of musical history.

There will also be open air performances in Millennium Place.

The festival begins with The Moving Air concert on Thursday, August 14, at 5.30pm, featuring squeezebox masters Ian Lowthian, Lester Simpson, Sylvain Barou, Saul Rose, Nathan Armstrong and John Somerville.

Tickets are £8, with concessions available.

Fiddle Strings will follow at 8pm, featuring numerous fiddle players from England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales, reflecting a variety of styles.

Canadian Natalie Hass will play the cello, while Taffy Thomas will tell stories.

Tickets are £10, with concessions available.

The following day at 2pm, adults who have taken part in the summer school will show off what they have achieved. Entry is free.

The venue for all the above concerts is Elvet Methodist Church, Old Elvet, Durham.

The outdoor show follows on Saturday, August 16, with adults and children from the summer schools performing in Millennium Place from 11am to 3.30pm.

Festival passes are available priced £21, or £15 for concessions.
