GOVERNORS are being sought for a cathedral.

Durham Cathedral is seeking two volunteers to become lay members of its governing chapter, to work alongside five residentiary canons and the chapter clerk.

They will help set the cathedral’s budget and oversee its day to day business.

Meetings are held 11 times a year, usually on a Tuesday, from 9.15am to 3pm.

In addition, there are three meetings relating to The Chorister School and occasional residential meetings.

Volunteers need to be able to visit Durham frequently and be committed to playing some part in the cathedral’s pattern of public worship.

Further, they should be passionate about the cathedral’s Christian purpose.

The power of appointment lies with the Bishop of Durham, Paul Butler.

Chapter clerk Philip Davies said: “Managing cathedrals these days is both complex and challenging as well as hugely rewarding.

“These vacancies for two lay members provide an exciting opportunity to be involved in the life of Durham Cathedral at an important time in its history as we embark on the next phase of our Open Treasure project and seek new ways to engage and support the communities we serve in the city, diocese and region.”

Candidates must have appropriate experience and the cathedral is especially interested in hearing from women and individuals from black and ethnic minority backgrounds.
