THE winners of a children’s photography competition have been chosen.

Judges picked four winners for the This Is My Durham contest at Durham Town Hall today (Tuesday, July 29).

Children aged 16 and under were invited to send in a photo they had taken showing what Durham means to them.

Images submitted included Durham Cathedral, the River Wear and the Lumiere light festival.

The winners of the primary school age category were Michael Stott, six, for his picture of Durham’s iconic Lord Londonderry statue, and Balthazar Hibon Jackson, five, for his view of the River Wear.

Rosie McEwan, five, and Rosa Jane Lyon, eight, were highly commended.

In the secondary school age category, the winners were Emily Heath, 14, for her shot of crowds at Lumiere, and Nicole Lambert, also 14, for her photo of the Prince Bishops River Cruiser on the Wear.

William Butcher, 13, Caitlyn Stott, 12, and Jade Atkinson, 11, were highly commended.

Councillor John Robinson, the Mayor of Durham, was one of the judges.

He said: “The standard of entries was very high and they all reflected Durham City in some way.

“The age range was superb. The competition was well supported and entries came from across the country.”

The other judges were Joe Grabham, president of Durham Photographic Society, Loraine Messer, treasure of Durham City Chamber of Trade, Ruth Robson, head of marketing and events at Durham Cathedral, and Mark Tallentire, Durham reporter at The Northern Echo.

The contest was organised by the Durham City Chamber of Trade and Durham Photographic Society.

The best 24 images submitted will be exhibited in the foyer of Durham Town Hall throughout August.
