RENOWNED organists from around the world will arrive in Durham tomorrow (Wednesday, July 30) as part of the annual congress of the Incorporated Association of Organists (IAO).

As part of their visit to the city, the delegates will be attending a special recital by Durham Cathedral’s Organist and Master of Choristers, Dr James Lancelot.

The recital, which is set to take place in the cathedral at 7.30pm tomorrow, will include pieces by Bach and Mozart.

Dr Lancelot, who recently received a doctorate of music from Durham University, is the president of the IAO and the artistic director of this year’s congress.

He said: “It is a great privilege to welcome so many organists to Durham.

“When I conducted the choir of the IAO Congress in Durham in 1991 I never expected that 23 years later I would welcome the IAO back here as its president.”

The musicians, who are to be hosted at St Chad’s College and the Radisson Blue hotel, will be taking part in a range of activities during their time in the city.

Their stay will include workshops and lectures, as well as recitals from local organists Magnus Williamson and David Ratnanayagam.

There will also be the chance for organ enthusiasts young and old to take part in a range of classes. Of particular note is a masterclass by Dame Gillian Weir for three lucky student organists which will take place in the Cathedral.

During their time in the North East the IAO delegates will also visit and sample music from organs in Brancepeth, Gateshead, Hexham and Newcastle upon Tyne.

Tickets £8 (£6 conc) are available from the World Heritage Site Visitor centre near the cathedral or the door.
