CHORISTERS and choral scholars leaving Durham Cathedral have recreated the quire area as part of the North-East landmark’s Lego model.

The 100 bricks form part of the initiative, which is designed to raise funds to transform the experience of those visiting the historic Norman building.

The quire is the area within the cathedral in which the choir rehearses and sings Evensong.

Four choral scholars, student members of the choir, and eight choristers wore their cassocks and surplices and sang as they added their bricks on Saturday, the last day of term.

The bricks were presented by six lay clerks, professional musicians who sing in the choir, the gentleman of the choir and the organists.

Tom Glendinning, senior lay clerk, said: “At the end of each choir year we have a tradition of presenting leaving gifts to their colleagues who are departing from 'The Back Rows' of Durham Cathedral Choir.

“This year we thought it would be a bit of fun to also buy them some Lego bricks for the cathedral model, so a little bit of them will always stay in Durham.”

The choral scholars and choristers received a certificate to commemorate their involvement in the model as well as a book containing photos of Durham signed by adult members.
