THE fascinating stories behind a selection of objects and artefacts from the First World War will be the subject of a talk this weekend.

Military historian Professor Peter Doyle will discuss The First World War in 100 Objects during a visit to Durham County Council’s DLI Museum and Durham Art Gallery in Durham City on Saturday (19 July).

Prof Doyle will look at a selection of items that represent the different fronts, nations and phases of the war as well as warfare on land, at sea and on the home front.

Each object has a unique narrative representing the high points or way markers that allow people to connect directly with events and dates during the war.

Specialising in the British experience of war, Prof Doyle is a member of the British Commission for Military History and secretary of the Parliamentary All-Party War Graves and Battlefield Heritage Group.

He is also the author of a number of books on military history and the material culture of war.

His talk, which starts at 2pm, is part of the DLI Museum and Durham Art Gallery’s programme of events to mark the centenary of the start of the First World War.

Tickets, priced at £3, are available in advance from the DLI shop or by calling 03000 266 590. Normal museum admission charges also apply.
