NORTH-East energy experts have welcomed a landmark report on tackling climate change.
Thinkers from the Durham Energy Institute (DEI) spoke out after the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) published its Climate Change 2014 study earlier this week.
The report said catastrophic climate change could be averted without sacrificing living standards and switching to clean energy is affordable.
Professor Janusz Bialek, from the DEI, said: “There is increased appreciation that it is more important to take action now rather than later to prevent further accumulation of GHGs (greenhouse gases) in atmosphere.
“Hence short-term imperfect but effective mitigation measures, such as switching from coal to gas, are better than long-term perfect measures, such as adoption of renewable, as the latter might come too late to prevent climate change.”
