A CAMPAIGN to stop violence against women and girls will hold a conference in the region next month.
The Durham Women Rising for Justice policy forum will feature among its speakers human rights lawyer Cris McCurley, criminology professor Nicole Westmarland, probation officer Jaclyn McGlasson and No More Page 3 campaigner Angela Towers.
The event will be held at the Gala Theatre, in Durham City, on Thursday, February 13, launching an awareness-raising festival which runs until March 30, encompassing International Women’s Day, Mothering Sunday and the global One Billion Rising campaign day – February 14.
The aim is to identify aspects of culture and society that need to be changed in order to eliminate violence against women and girls.
Roberta Blackman-Woods, Durham City MP, gave the event her backing, saying: “I am proud to support Durham Women Rising for Justice and be part of their work to encourage a cultural change in society that enables full gender equality and promotes awareness of issues affecting women locally.”
The event will be followed by an awareness-raising event in Durham Market Place the following day.
