RESIDENTS have launched a campaign to oppose a housing development in a countryside beauty spot.

Plans to create 32 homes on land near Hall Road, The Grove, Consett, have been submitted to Durham County Council.

The land forms part of the former steelworks site, which is being redeveloped by Project Genesis, the organisation behind the plan.

Mother-of-two Rachel Armstrong, who lives yards from the proposed development, said: “I am absolutely devastated. We saved all of our money up to buy this forever house and this is just horrendous.

“The views are outstanding and we have got a wildlife corridor here where we see deer, badgers, red kites, butterflies and buzzards. It is haven for people in the area.”

A public meeting is being held this evening at 7pm at The Grove and Moorside Club.

Stephen Garden, from Hallgarth, Selby Gardens and Manor Close Neighbourhood Watch, said: “People flock to this area for walks and the amenities and they are outraged other sites are being ignored at the expense of a beautiful natural area.”

An online petition opposing the development has already got 250 signatures.

John Hinds, secretary of The Grove Community and Residents Association, which has formally objected to the plan, said: “There is also the increased traffic situation in The Grove to consider.

“It is going to be more dangerous for the residents. There are two primary schools in the area and they are going to be bringing lorries through to carry out the work.”

Amethyst Homes, the Consett-based developer, has submitted a construction management plan as part of the application.

The company proposes to begin 16 weeks of enabling work from June 1, before starting the two year construction work in October.

A planning statement has been submitted by KLR Planning, on behalf of Project Genesis, as part of the application.

It said: “Redevelopment of parts of the former steelworks site contributes by rebuilding a strong vibrant and healthy community in Consett.

“By building new homes, the increases the population, which is attractive to businesses, and brings new shops and services, creating new jobs for residents.”
