A CHARITY toy appeal to supply disadvantaged Christmas presents to youngsters across Consett and Stanley has been launched.

The Salvation Army, in Consett, is collecting gifts for over 500 youngsters in the run up to the festive period.

It is also collecting money so teenagers can have vouchers to buy their own gifts and putting together food parcels so less fortunate families can have a traditional turkey dinner with the trimmings.

Appeal co-ordinator Joe Toner said: “With the austerity measures going on in the county, and the changes in the benefits systems, we are inundated.

“We have got a lot more than we did last year.

“We have started early this year and are look from support from people but also from businesses in the towns.

“Small children we can cope with, but for teenagers we have to go out and buy for them especially.”

People can leave donations at the Salvation Army Citadel on Sherburn Terrace.

Major Ian Fawcett said: “It is very important and helps families who are experiencing difficulties.

“It makes real difference and is in keeping with the spirit of Christmas.”
