THE first of a series events for people with an interest in the history and heritage of their area will take place next week.

The Land of Oak and Iron, a project dedicated to the history and natural habitat of the Derwent Valley, has organised a Meet and Mingle event.

People with an interest in the history and heritage of the valley are invited to the event at Burnopfield Cricket Club on Wednesday, starting at 7pm.

Visitors can meet with like-minded people, learn more about the Land of Oak and Iron project and take part in a prize quiz.

There will also be live entertainment from Community Music Whickham and Swalwell and a hot supper.

Project manager Karen Daglish said: “The Land of Oak and Iron is a hidden gem in the North East and the Derwent Valley really offers something for everyone.

“The event is a great opportunity for people to discover something new while finding out more about all of the wonderful history, heritage and natural habitats right on their doorstep during a fun, friendly and really relaxed evening.”

The project area includes Consett, Rowlands Gill, Prudhoe and Whickham; spanning historic industrial places that once shaped the landscape, along with countryside and woodland and natural habitats.

Ms Daglish added: “We want to rekindle local passion to enable this area’s unique combination of natural, industrial and cultural heritage to be conserved, enhanced and celebrated”.

Tickets to the Meet and Mingle event cost £5 available on the website landoroakandiron.org.uk or on the door.
