A DRIVER arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving after a man died in a crash has been released pending further inquiries.

The collision involving a blue MG ZR and a white Renault van happened on the A692, in Consett, on Sunday.

The male driver of a third vehicle, a black Vauxhall Insignia, was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving.

A spokesman for Durham Constabulary said: “The MG ZR was travelling from Castleside towards Consett when it was involved in a collision with a second vehicle travelling south west.

"The male driver of the MG ZR was sadly pronounced dead at the scene and our thoughts are with his family and friends.

“The male driver of the Renault received hospital treatment for non-life threatening injuries.”

The dead man has not yet been named.

The spokesman added: "The man arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving has been released under investigation and inquires are ongoing.

"Anyone who witnessed the collision is urged to contact Durham Police on 101 quoting incident number 153 of October 1."

Police are also appealing for dashcam footage which may help the investigation.
