CHILDREN discovered new horizons when they came to school dressed in traditional costumes to mark the European Day of Languages.
Russia, Spain, Greece, France and Norway were just some of the countries represented by pupils of St Patrick’s RC Primary School, in Flint Hill, Dipton.
Deputy headteacher Louise Gardner said: “Each teacher chose a European country for their class and the children were invited to come in traditional clothing or flag colours.
“Across the day the children took part in a variety of activities, including Greek dancing, Russian art, French and Spanish speaking and arts and crafts relating to Norway and Italy.
“Learning a new language can open doors for them and give them lots of opportunities in life.
"It also helps them to make friends with people from other countries.
“The earlier that children learn a language the better. Days like today are essential to opening their eyes to the wider world.”
She added: “The day was very successful. We have extremely creative members of staff and the parents have been so supportive in helping the children with their costumes."
Kitchen staff also changed the menu to dish up world foods.
