A PET cat had to be put down at the weekend after being shot with an air rifle.

The incident happened between the evening of Friday, April 21, and the following afternoon in the Crookhall area of Consett.

Consett Police said: "A family cat has been injured by an air rifle pellet and sadly had to be put to sleep as a result of its injuries.

"It is unknown if this was an intentional act or an accident. It is believed to have occurred in the Crookhall area.

"Any information regarding the incident would be appreciated. Ring 101 and reference officer PC 2781 Price."
