A RESTAURANT offering monster meals has opened on a former steelworks site.

Eating challenges at Man vs Food, in Consett, include a four 6oz burgers with melted Monterey Jack cheese, Mexican cheese, beef chilli, crisp turkey bacon and sliced BBQ brisket with skinny fries, coleslaw, beans, onion rings and chunky chips.

The new American diner has created around 20 jobs at the site formerly known as Tiger Bills, Giovanni’s and Sopranos.

It is the third outlet in the region with others in South Shields and Heaton.

Manager Filzan Baig said: “We do a variety of meats and burgers with huge portions as well as cheesecakes and cakes.

“We don’t do such a thing as a small size, except for the kids meals. The portions are quite big as standard. It is important to get the quality of the food right as well as the quantity.

“The challenges are huge though. We dare people to take a challenge. They are only for the brave.”

All the food challenges are for one person only and diners have a time limit of half an hour to finish them.

People can also choose from two whole chickens, 12 large chicken wings or a tray of meat including spicy lamb sausage, beef ribs, a whole chicken, chicken wings, pulled chicken and sliced beef brisket.
