A PENSIONER disturbed an intruder in her home.

The 92-year-old woman was outside tidying her garden in Durham Road, Lanchester when she looked up and saw a man standing at her bedroom window.

Police say the man looked at her, then came downstairs carrying a small, white cardboard box.

He claimed that he had been in her house carrying out checks because there was a burst water main in the area.

He then walked away and headed along the A691 towards Durham.

A spokesman for Durham Police said: “The victim has checked her property and confirmed that she did not have a leak and no property had been removed from the house."

The incident happened at approximately 2.50pm on Thursday (May 12).

The suspect is described as being white, in his 30s, with dark, slicked-back hair and of thin build. He was wearing blue trousers and a fluorescent workman’s sleeveless top.

Anyone with information is asked to ring Durham Police on 101.
