THE family which spearheaded the region’s forgotten paper-making industry will be remembered at a free talk this weekend.

Catherine Wright will outline the history of the Annandale family, which operated paper mills across North Durham during the 19th Century.

County Durham’s first paper mill was set up at Croxdale in the 1670s and the industry continued in some form through to the 1980s.

Among the most successful firms was John Annandale and Sons, which operated paper mills at Shotley Grove and Lintzford near modern-day Consett.

Mrs Wright investigated the family links to the industry after discovering that her husband was a direct descendant of company founder John Annandale.

The talk, held by Durham County Local History Society, takes place in the City Theatre in Fowler’s Yard, in Back Silver Street, Durham on Saturday, May 14 at 2.30pm.
