POLICE investigating a road accident that left a teenager seriously injured are continuing to appeal for witnesses.

A 16-year-old girl suffered a serious leg injury when she was struck by a van on the outskirts of Consett on Friday night.

It happened at 8.45pm on the A692 Villa Real roundabout and involved a Citroen Berlingo, which was heading south towards Stanley.

The girl, from Leadgate, was crossing the road at the time was hit by the van.

She was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle for treatment and kept in over the weekend.

The driver of the Citroen, a 29-year-old man from Stanley was unhurt, as was his 32-year-old male passenger.

Police have issued a picture of the van involved and are urging people with information to come forward.

The road was closed for just over two hours while the collision investigation unit examined the scene.
