SIXTH form students have used their entrepreneurial skills to raise cash for charity.

Teams from North Durham Academy, in Stanley, have been taking part in a Tenner Challenge, with groups given £10 to develop their business idea.

Students Beth Martin, Lauren Brydon, Becky Reay, Laura Leathard and Jessica Beverley set up Cake 'N' Shake, selling cakes and milkshakes to students and staff.

They made a total of £218.20 with their venture and made a donations of £109.20 to Willow Burn Hospice.

Fellow sixth formers Hannah Selwood, Bethany Lamond and Sophie Dodds set up a business selling quiz sheets to staff at £1 a time and made £80.

They then used the proceeds to fund two tombolas at school events and raised a further £60. The girls have also split their profit with Willow Burn Hospice and donated £70.

Academy principal David Thornton said “I’m incredibly proud of our sixth form students and how they all embraced The Tenner Challenge with true entrepreneurial spirit.

“To then donate part of their profit to Willow Burn Hospice is testament to the maturity, compassion and community spirit which our sixth formers have in abundance at North Durham Academy.”
