A MAN who has been homeless for ten years has had a house completely refurbished by a North-East charity.

Andrew Nairn has spent time living on the region’s streets, in homeless shelters and on friends’ floors.

But the 26-year-old now has a fully fitted house in Chester-le-Street, County Durham, after an appeal on Facebook was seen by a benevolent group formed earlier this year.

Kelly Williamson, of Consett Community Trust, saw the social media appeal posted by his friend and decided to help get Mr Nairn get back on his feet.

She said: “We made a list of what was required and started putting things together for him.

“The response has been fantastic. We have furnished his house and we have got surplus and we are getting more support for the trust now as result.

“We will be continuing to support Andrew over the next few months to make sure he is settled in.”

The trust has managed to collect a wide range of household items including a television, pictures, sofa, fridge freezer, washing machine, microwave, table and chairs, kitchen utensils, vacuum cleaner, iron, ironing board, double bed, bedding, wardrobes, drawers and clothes.

Mr Nairn, who grew up in Chester-le-Street became homeless aged 16 and lived with friends before sleeping rough in Newcastle and staying at hostels.

He is now enjoying his swish new pad and planning to look for work.

Mr Nairns said: “It was horrible being on the streets. I was on the streets with my best friend for a while and it was awful.

“It is horrible not knowing where to go at night times and not knowing where to sleep, but I love it here. It is really nice and I am really proud of my new home.

“If it was not for them I would not have half of this stuff. I am really excited.”

Consett Community Trust, which was launched in January, runs a foodbank, as well supplying clothes, toys and toiletries to people facing hardship.

The group runs from Delves Lane Village Hall and helps needy families in and around the area.

It still needs help from businesses who may be able to provide transport to collect and deliver large items, as well as any stock they may be able to supply or staff they can spare to help out.
