A PARTY has been held to mark the 100th birthday of a woman in north Durham.

Residents of Abigail Lodge Care Home, in Delves Lane, Consett, celebrated the landmark occasion with Nancy Greenwood.

Ms Greenwood received a card from the Queen and a telegram from pension secretary Iain Duncan Smith.

Care home activities co-ordinator Laura Telford said: “It is amazing for her to have reached 100 years and we are making a big fuss of her. Everyone thinks a lot of Nancy.”

She was born on March 11, 1916, in Shotley Bridge to William and Ann Greenwood and had an older brother.

She attended Benfieldside School and recalls being taken there by the coalman.

During her life she worked as a carer looking after her father, as her mother died when she was a child.

In her younger days she enjoyed trips to the seaside at South Shields and Whitley Bay and visits to the cinema.

Ms Greenwood’s cousin, Audrey Freak, said: “She was always happy, friendly and outgoing. She loved music and operettas. She was always on the go and very helpful to other people. It is wonderful for her to reach her 100th birthday.”
