VILLAGERS are being asked for their opinions on proposals to protect their community’s heritage.

A Durham County Council consultation exercise is taking place on the conservation area in the historic village of Lanchester which, it says, will help raise awareness of the special character and interest of the area.

The documents recommend ways to improve a conservation area and manage change.

The Lanchester appraisal includes proposals to extend the designated boundary of the conservation area, changes to rules on external alterations to some properties, and management proposals.

It is currently at a draft stage and people who live, own businesses and shop in the village are being encouraged to have their say at an information session.

A drop-in session will take place at Lynwood House in Lanchester on Wednesday (Feb 3) from 2.30pm to 6.30pm attended by staff from the council’s design and conservation team.

The consultation exercise will take place until Friday, February 27.
