A COMMUNITY allotment organisation in north Durham is looking for groups or individuals to take over raised beds to grow their own veg.

Blackfyne Allotment Association, near Consett, currently has six patches available in one area at the plots, near Durham Road in Blackhill.

They are ready for use and available to schools, groups and anyone interested in making use of them.

It also has a derelict plot in need of clearing and working to make it ready for planting in the spring.

The allotment with raised beds has previously been used by Durham Agency Against Crime’s ‘Haggrid’ scheme, which steers young people away from mischief by getting them involved in gardening.

Association member Des East, 66, from Blackhill, said: “They have now got a bigger site so this is vacant and what we would like to do is make this a community allotment.

“We would like to find out if there is an interest from anyone in the area who is interested in making a start, because allotments tend to be great big things and people find them too hard to handle at times.

“This way it can give people a small starter to see if they like it and it is ready to go now.”

Anyone interested can contact Mr East on 01207-508-376.
