A FIREFIGHTER is getting a British Empire Medal for services to fire and rescue and the community in County Durham.

Ken Ball, 48, who is the station manager in Consett, was named in the New Year Honours list.

The citation from the Cabinet Office said: “His inspirational leadership has transformed the fire station into a true community hub which not only helps keep people safe but has been used to improve the lives of local people.

“He is a role model for other staff and is held in extremely high regard by partner organisations and the community.

“He works tirelessly to drive community engagement and public safety, has committed hundreds of hours of his own time to ensure these events are successful and is a true ambassador for the fire and rescue service.”

Mr Ball has raised thousands of pounds for local charities, held Christmas parties for vulnerable groups and staged many community engagement events.

He has created a flourishing Young Firefighters Association (YFA) in Consett which provides young people aged 14 to 17 with practical and theoretical skills, discipline, focus and life skills. He teaches young people to work in a team and helps prepare them for work life.

Mr Ball, who is married to Carol, said: “It is totally unexpected. When I opened up the letter I could not believe it. I was genuinely speechless for about ten minutes. It totally blew me away.”
