OUTLINE planning permission has been granted in for a major housing development on agricultural land at the edge of a village, despite objections from local residents.

Durham County Council’s area planning committee meeting yesterday (Thursday, November 27) approved an outline application for 87 units on land to the west of Croft Close, Greencroft, near Annfield Plain.

Members were told there had been eight letters of objection and one in support of the plans.

Objectors expressed concerns about the loss of their views and devaluation of their properties, saying the proposals were likely to set a precedent for further development in the countryside.

They also voiced fears over traffic safety.

According to the applicant, Roman Guiramand, the development will increase the overall quantity and mix of the housing stock in Annfield Plain and will support the village’s services and community life.

Planning officers said the developer has addressed landscape concerns, while highways officers had no concerns over traffic issues.

The meeting was told there were sufficient places at primary schools in the area and at North Durham Academy to accommodate pupils from the developments.

Planning officers recommended approval subject to the developer entering into an agreement to secure the provision of affordable housing and the provision of buffer planting.
