A SPORTSWEAR store has confirmed it will create 19 jobs by opening a new store in a former steel town.

SportsDirect.com is opening its doors to the public in Consett, County Durham, on October 25.

The chain, run by Newcastle United’s billionaire owner, Mike Ashley, will be based at Hermiston Retail Park, near the town centre.

A spokesman for the firm said: “We are delighted to be opening our new store in Consett.

“As we continue to grow throughout the UK, our ethos has never changed in that we offer our customers the biggest brands in all types of sportswear, footwear and sports equipment at low prices.”

The chain was founded in 1982 by the controversial football boss.

The 5,800 sq ft store will include dedicated in-store areas for running, outdoor activities, football and golf among other sports.
