SILVER surfer Margaret Rigden is discovering new ways to keep in touch with family across the world after taking part in a computer training class.

The 91-year-old has learnt how to find information using search engines, send emails and order her shopping online.

Mrs Rigden, who lives in the Lynwood House sheltered housing scheme in Lanchester with her husband Brian, was invited to take part in the course by her housing association, Derwentside Homes.

She said: “Since completing the course I have emailed my daughter who lives in France, and my two granddaughters in Scotland and Swindon.

“It is really nice to be able to connect with them whenever I want and they have shared photos and kept me up to date with what they are doing. I feel like a new world has just opened up to me.”

Mrs Rigden now also plans to learn how to use Skype so she can speak to her grandson in Australia.

As well as sessions taking place at Derwentside Homes’ sheltered housing schemes, the association is also offering free advice through its DigitAL mobile unit, which travels to communities across Derwentside delivering sessions covering everything from using a laptop or tablet to ordering shopping online and using social media.
