A TEENAGER has had a long hair chopped off to raise money for a charity close to her heart.

Katie Merritt, from Consett, had her long locks cut in public at the bandstand in Consett Park to raise funds for Parkinson's UK.

The 16-year-old, a student of Consett Academy, chose to help the charity because her grandmother has Parkinson’s.

She said: “My gran, who I am very close to, has Parkinson’s.

“It’s a worthy cause that is close to my heart and I want to do something to support Parkinson’s UK..

“My hair will also be donated to Little Princess Trust for unfortunate children.”

Abby Robinson, North East Fundraiser for Parkinson’s UK said: “I’d like to a thank Katie for this brave and selfless act and hope that she raises awareness and funds for Parkinson’s UK.

“As the UK’s Parkinson’s support and research charity we’re leading the work to find a cure, and we’re closer than ever. But our work is dependent on donations.”

Katie is aiming to raise £150 for Parkinson’s UK. And can be sponsored at www.justgiving.com/katie-merritt1
