CHILDREN in north Durham are taking part in a Scandanavian week.
Pupils at Castleside Primary School, near Consett, are taking part in dance sessions today (Thursday, May 21) to the music of Grieg and Abba.
Staff from the Ikea store in Gateshead, who visited on Monday, are back again tomorrow to teach youngsters about Swedish culture and sustainability.
As part of the work, the children will be building shelters from recycled materials.
There has already been a Scandinavian food tasting sessions organised by parents and friends, which was on Wednesday.
The children have also been working on displays associated with the stories of Hans Christian Andersen and taking part in a Lego competition.
Teachers have been working with their classes during the week, looking at other areas of Scandinavian art and culture.
Headteacher Liz Charlton said: “The children have been learning about life in Sweden, Denmark and Norway.
“Every year we focus on a particular country or region and do a lot of themed activities and the children do their own research.
“They have really loved and so have the staff. It has been a wonderful week.”
