POLICE are trying to trace a man who dragged a young woman into a lane, pushing her over and assaulted her, late at night.

The incident took place in Tantobie, near Stanley, at about 11pm last Friday (May 8).

The 16-year-old woman was pulled into a lane, at the Penshaw View junction with Good Street, where she was pushed over and assaulted.

It was said to have taken place not far from Hunter’s coach yard premises.

The suspect was disturbed by a vehicle driving past along the main road and, as he released his grip, it enabled the teenager to run from the scene.

Her attacker then ran off, in the direction of Burnopfield.

The victim, who had been on her way home after socialising with friends, was left badly shaken but escaped uninjured.

Police said the suspect was described as white, aged approximately 17 to 20, about 5ft 10in and described as of muscular build.

He was wearing a black tracksuit top and black baggy tracksuit bottoms.

Anyone who can help is asked to contact either Detective Constable Lindsay Guest or Marco Fantin, at Chester-le-Street CID, via the 101 non-emergency number, or by Crimestoppers, anonymously 0800-555-111.
