THE parents of a little girl born with a rare condition are holding a charity night to help other youngsters.

Baby Georgie Yorke needed emergency surgery as soon as she was born as her feeding tube was not connected to her stomach.

She is now seven months old and has had to undergo a series of operations in her little life, but is now ‘full of beans’, according to her parents, Vic Yorke and Stacey Ross.

Miss Ross, 25, a travel agent, from Delves Lane, Consett, County Durham, said: “Her feeding tube is not connected. We were giving her a bottle and it was coming out of her nose and going everywhere.

"It was awful, so at under 24 hours old our little princess had to have major surgery to reconnect it.

“It is every parents’ nightmare, but after spending a lot of time in intensive care and also on a surgical ward at the Great North Childrens’ Hospital and after another few operations our little girl is full of beans, full of smiles, and brings us all so much love.”

The condition is known as a tracheoesophageal fistula, which is a connection between the upper part of the oesophagus and the windpipe, or trachea.

This causes air to pass from the windpipe to the oesophagus and stomach, and stomach acid to pass into the lungs.

Georgie was treated at the Royal Victoria Infirmary’s Great North Children’s Hospital Intensive Care Unit and on ward nine.

Now her family is organising a charity night for the unit that saved her life and nursed her back to health.

Miss Ross said: “The staff at the hospital were absolutely fantastic and now we feel it's our time to show just really how grateful we are for all they done for us.

“So we are in the process of arranging a fundraising event to raise money for the hospital and the wards that Georgie has spent a lot of time on.

“We are hoping to have live entertainment, tombola's, raffles, auctions and more.

“We would really appreciate people’s your support and would love to see as many people there as possible. Please help us raise some money for such an amazing cause.”

The charity event will be held on February 28 at The Grove Workingmen’s Club, Deneburn Terrace, from 7pm until late with music from The Buskers.

Tickets priced at £5 can be obtained from JulaCrafts, Raglan Street, Consett; Park Lane News, Derwent Centre, Consett or by calling Miss Ross on 0771-372-9268.
