A WOMAN accused of helping to kill a pet dog and deliberately torching her home has appeared in court.

Margaret Carroll appeared before Consett Magistrates Court today (Thursday, February 5) charged with aiding and abetting, and failure to protect the welfare of an animal.

The charge relates to the death of Molly, the Bedlington Terrier, between December 20 and January 10.

The 60-year-old is also charged with arson with intent to endanger life following a ferocious fire at her home in First Street, Bradley Bungalows, near Leadgate, Consett, County Durham, on Saturday morning.

Her daughter, Katrina Livingstone, 37, has also been charged with arson with intent to endanger life and appeared before magistrates in Peterlee on Wednesday.

Both women were critically ill in hospital over the weekend for injuries sustained before the blaze, but have now recovered and been charged.

The cases against them have been adjourned until February 18 when they will appear before Durham Crown Court.

They have been remanded into custody until then.
