A SWIMMING pool in north Durham has been closed after part of the roof was blown off in high winds.

Belle Vue Swim Centre, in Consett, was damaged by the severe weather between 6pm and 7pm on New Year’s Day.

Police evacuated residents from bungalows at nearby Harvey Court over concerns their homes were also at risk.

Inspector Keith Wardle said section of roof 20ft by 15ft was blown off.

He said: “The bulk of the roof from one part has come off. There was a few people evacuated who went to stay with family in case any more of the roof came off overnight. Officers have been there all night to keep the area safe.”

This morning (Friday, January 2) representatives from Durham County Council have made the roof safe with help from County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service.

Jack Sanderson, the duty manager of the Leisureworks-run centre, said it was due to reopen on Monday.

He said: “The council have been out and assessed it and secured the building.

“Over the weekend they assessed the full extent of the damage.

“There is minimal damage inside. It seems to be the skin of the roof that has come off.

“We are hoping to have it reopened by Monday.”

The swim centre is due to close permanently in June when the new multi-million leisure centre opens as part of the new academy on the former Civic Centre site.
