A LITTLE girl who was moved following a First World War commemoration service is becoming one of the Royal British Legion’s youngest members.

Eight-year-old Chiana Gray announced she wants to fundraise for the military charity after attended a Lights Out ceremony, marking the outbreak of the conflict, at Stanley Civic Hall in August.

The youngster plans to sell poppies with her mother, Clair, to people in Delves Lane, Consett, County Durham, where she lives.

Mrs Gray, who works at Tesco, said: “After we went to the service at Stanley she said she wanted to do what she could to help people who have fought for their county.

“She is helping with bag packing and cake stalls for them. She is taking a real interest in it. I think it is a really good thing. I am over the moon for her.”

Chiana, who attends The Grove Primary School, and ten year-old Abigail Owen, are being made honorary junior members of the Consett branch of the Royal British Legion at a meeting of the group tomorrow night. (Wednesday, October 1)

The girls have been praised by veteran Consett poppy appeal coordinator Vera Parnaby, 75, who has been raising cash for the legion for 70 years.

She said: “It is nice to see them coming in young as I started when I was young as well and continued ever since.”
