TWO Scouts have been chosen to represent the region at a worldwide jamboree.

Dominic Biasi, of Consett Scouts, and Jude Shilcock, of Derwentside Explorers, will be among 3,000 UK Scouts at the 23rd World Scout Jamboree in Japan next July.

Dominic, 14, of Cornsay, and Jude, 17, of The Grove, both pupils at St Bede’s RC School in Lanchester, have each pledged to raise £3,300, some of which will go towards helping Scouts from poorer countries attend the three-week event.

In all, 30,000 teenagers from more than 200 countries will take part.

There will be a peace programme, with visits to Hiroshima and the Peace Memorial Park to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Hiroshima bombing; cross-cultural activities; community service; events around peace, the environment, human rights and health; and a city of science.

Dominic said: “I was really pleased to be chosen.

“I wanted to meet people from around the world and I’ve always wanted to go to Japan.”

A fundraising craft fair and coffee morning will be held at Lanchester Community Centre, Newbiggen Lane, Lanchester, on Saturday, October 4, from 10am to noon.

There will be jewellery, cards, bookmarks and drawings available to buy, plus a cake stall, bric-a-brac, a tombola and raffle.
